Atelier Marks Gaal — Architecture Workshop
Atelier Marks Gaal is the architecture workshop of Joshua Marks and Emma Gaal — a practice working across Australia on bespoke residential homes, coastal retreats, and small hospitality buildings. The studio is driven by curiosity about the way buildings sit in their landscape — responsive to site, light, material, and the lives of the people who inhabit them.
The practice is registered with the NSW Architects Registration Board (ARB #13240). Joshua Marks and Emma Gaal have completed projects on the NSW South Coast (Yuin Country), Mid North Coast NSW (Biripi Country), and work with clients across Sydney, Newcastle, and regional Australia — bringing a considered, material-led approach to every project from initial site conversations through to construction.
Yowani — Residential Architecture, NSW South Coast
Yowani is a residential project by Atelier Marks Gaal, completed in 2025 on Yuin Country in Rosedale, on the NSW South Coast. The project explores the relationship between a new home and its surrounding coastal landscape — responding to the specific qualities of the site, its light, topography, and material character. The house is designed to feel rooted in the land it occupies, with an architecture that is direct and unhurried. Photography by Alex Brunton.
House of Shadows — Residential Architecture, NSW South Coast
House of Shadows is a residential architecture project by Atelier Marks Gaal, completed in 2025 on Yuin Country in Rosedale, NSW South Coast. The house takes its name from the way light moves through it across the day — deep shadows, filtered sun, and the slow shift of interior atmosphere from morning to evening. The design responds to the orientation and landscape of the site, with architecture shaped by the qualities of this particular place. Photography by Alex Brunton.
Magenta Outhouse — Residential Architecture, Mid North Coast NSW
Magenta Outhouse is a small residential outbuilding by Atelier Marks Gaal, completed in 2025 on Biripi Country in Elands, Mid North Coast NSW. The project is a study in material presence and restraint — a compact structure that holds its ground quietly in the surrounding landscape. The bold material choice anchors the building to its site while maintaining a lightness of occupation. Photography by Alex Brunton.
Cacoon in the Canopy — Residential Architecture, NSW South Coast
Cacoon in the Canopy is a project by Atelier Marks Gaal, located on Yuin Country in Rosedale, NSW South Coast, completed in 2026. The project takes its character from the surrounding tree canopy — an architecture that nestles into its landscape rather than imposing on it. Photography by Alex Brunton.
